Submission Guidelines

Black Mountain Press is a literary press for outstanding emerging writers publishing several different genres of books annually. For the next ten years from 2018 through the end of 2028 our focus will be in collections of poetry, memoir, novels and collections of short stories. Our editors are looking for the highest quality literary fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry that combines a distinct voice and vision.

Writers can submit their work through Submittable. We do not accept manuscripts via post.

Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but the author must notify us immediately if their work is accepted for publication elsewhere. We do not accept reprints. We are not currently accepting: children’s or young adult literature, plays, self-help books, romance, science fiction, thrillers, detective fiction, horror stories, or westerns. We do not publish material that promotes discrimination (racism, sexism, ableism, and other discriminatory topics). We do not have any established themes for our issues.

We do not currently pay our writers and artists at this time. Eventually, we would love to pay our contributors, but it is not possible at the moment. With this in mind, we do everything we can to keep submission fees low. If the submission fee is a barrier to you, please email us. Submission fees vary depending on the project:

  • HerWords: $5
  • JanusWords: $5
  • The Gumball Project: $2
  • Cover Art Competition: $5
  • Twin Rivers Film Festival: $28

Due to the overwhelming interest in publishing with the Black Mountain Press as well as our small editorial staff, it may take a while to receive a response. If you haven’t heard from us in six months, please send an email.

Send your finished work along with an author biography via Submittable. Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the page only in 12pt font. If accepted for publication we will reach out via email.

For any questions, contact senior editor Ivana Rosenblatt at fromivana@gmail.com.
