HerWords Literary Magazine

HerWords is a quarterly collection of poetry for, by, and about women. The collection provides a feminine touch on the literary world and gives women the opportunity to receive recognition for who they are and for the words they have written. The Black Mountain Press created HerWords in 2016 to highlight art made by women.

JanusWords Literary Magazine

The Black Mountain Press introduced JanusWords in winter of 2023, a quarterly literary magazine featuring words of queer, trans, nonbinary and gender nonconforming writers, to support the work of LGBTQIA+ poets and provide a harbor for their truths.

Janus is the Roman god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames and endings. Often depicted with two mythical faces, they are said to appear in moments of great change and turbulent times to preside over the struggle between war and peace and pave the way for social and societal change.

All who find themselves reflected in the LGBTQIA+ community are encouraged to submit to JanusWords. Click the link below to submit your two best poems for publication consideration. Selected writers will receive two copies of the magazine as payment.

The Gumball Project

Starting this summer, Black Mountain Press will have a gumball machine on-site that dispenses short-form poetry from writers all over the world! Please include no more than two poems per submission, up to 5-lines each (think: haiku, limerick, tanka, cinquain, etc).

Cover Art Competition

Each season, Black Mountain Press seeks to promote artists by putting their work on the cover of our HerWords and JanusWords Literary Magazines. The winner of each season will also be mentioned in the Letter From the Editor, which will include where to find more work by the artist.
