Description
Connie Bostic was born in Spindale, NC in 1936. She was raised by her maternal grandparents. Always drawing, she wanted to become an artist. After high school she was sent to Gardner Webb Junior College where there was no art department. After graduation she married and had five children. She was in her mid thirties before she had the opportunity to study art. She attended classes at UNCA, and eventually received a Masters degree in studio art from Western Carolina University, where Department head Robert Godfrey encouraged her to find her own voice. Her work, for the most part is concerned with issues of inclusion, justice, and equality. Her work is included in the collections of the State of North Carolina, the Asheville Art Museum, The Fine Arts Museum at WCU, the YMI Cultural Center, and many private collections. She maintains a studio near her home in Fairview. Connie Bostic is considered by most to be the President Emeritus of all things art in Western North Carolina. She opened the first contemporary art gallery in Asheville, Zone One, more than thirty years ago. Her work spans decades and is filled with social and political insight.
